Jeez, I hope Boeing can get ahold of this stuff for the new AF1

“ The body of the presidential Il-96 is made of special radio-absorbing materials that make it invisible to radars ”

I LoL’d. I think the best they can hope for with a jet that size is a RCS of a Winnebago .

I figure with vantablack and similar being commercially available, the paints the Air Force has available must be at least a decade ahead of that in terms of absorbing the radar portion of the spectrum.

I also assume that they wouldn’t want it on AF1 because an accidental collision is a much bigger risk than an unexpected radar-guided missile, much the same way they generally don’t do fighter escorts for AF1 except for photo ops because it’s much more likely the fighters would accidentally hit AF1 than intercept anything.

I call BS on that as well. Aren’ t the fan blades one of the biggest issues for hiding from radar?

must use those new nuclear blade-less ramjets they have been successfully developing

Lol, Let B oeing first be capable of developing planes that don’ t nose dive r andomly, thanks to cost cutting efforts on software and engineering development . .

Far as I know only stealth aircraft use radar absorbing paint. I suppose it could be useful to reduce AF1's RCS, but then that plane has other active & passive defenses to protect itself. I thought vantablack might offer some protection but it only absorbs visible spectrum radiation  while microwave  energy is a different part of the spectrum entirely.

Yep. That’s why the F-117 and B-2 have their engines hidden behind screens to reduce/eliminate radar return from the fans.

Although radar-absorbing paints are a thing, there’s a reason our stealth planes are basically flying wings with hidden engine inlets, disguised exhaust, and strange curves/ angles everywhere.

dont the F-22 and F-35 do something with it as well? like ‘S’ shaped ducts so the fan blades can’ t be seen from the front or something ?

Yep, it’s a mix. LO design, radar absorbent  materials, and then the paint, which is definitely not the most important aspect, but is probably the only one you can retrofit onto an airliner.

Yep. the F-22 has S-ducts and the F-35 has a Y-duct.
